Orlando Pirates are wasting no time revamping their squad ahead of the upcoming season, moving swiftly in the transfer market as they prepare for a fresh chapter under new leadership.
Having already secured the services of Richards Bay FC left-back Nkosikhona Ndaba, the Buccaneers are determined to strengthen their defensive options even further. This comes as the club braces for the departure of two long-serving left-backs — club captain Innocent Maela and veteran Paseka Mako — both of whom will leave the club at the end of June.
Maela, 33, has seen his involvement dwindle over the past two campaigns and has reportedly been offered a role off the field at Pirates. Whether he decides to accept that position or continue playing elsewhere remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Mako is expected to make a high-profile switch to fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs after being released as a free agent.
With that in mind, Pirates are not resting on their laurels. According to SuperSport journalist Karabo Phasha, the Soweto giants have now set their sights on one of South Africa’s brightest young prospects — Neo Rapoo of SuperSport United.
The 20-year-old left-back impressed at the recent U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he played every minute of South Africa’s campaign en route to lifting the trophy. His consistent performances have now caught the attention of Pirates, who have reportedly reached out to his representatives to explore a potential move.
“Orlando Pirates have enquired about the availability of U20 & SuperSport United LB Neo Rapoo. Pirates have already called his agent a few weeks ago about the possibilities around him,” Phasha posted on X.
With a major defensive rebuild underway, it’s clear that the Buccaneers are planning not only for the upcoming season but for the future as well — and Rapoo could be a key part of that puzzle.
