Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has questioned the club’s decision to sign Richards Bay striker Yanela Mbuthuma, voicing strong concerns over the move. Despite Mbuthuma recently signing a five-year extension with the Natal Rich Boyz, he has reportedly joined the Buccaneers — a transfer that likely came at a high cost.
Mbuthuma, 23, was also on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar, but Josephs isn’t convinced he fits the bill for a club of Pirates’ ambitions.
“Why are we targeting players from teams outside the top eight? No disrespect to the boy, but we should be aiming higher,” Josephs said on SoccerBeat. “He only scored six goals in 27 games last season. That’s roughly a goal every four or five games. I don’t see how that justifies a big transfer.”
Josephs emphasized that Pirates should be scouting from the league’s elite sides, not struggling teams. “If we want to compete with the best, we need to sign from the best. There’s not much outside the top eight.”
Josephs Gives Nod to Moremi Move
While critical of Mbuthuma’s signing, Josephs praised the club’s decision to bring in AmaZulu winger Tshepang Moremi. The 24-year-old, who joined Pirates just two days ago, made a strong impression last season with four goals and seven assists in 31 appearances.
Josephs highlighted Moremi’s drive and ambition. “Moremi looks hungry and ready. That’s a boy who wants to make something of himself. He’s not just in it for the freebies or to show off — he’s here to work and grow.”
Josephs’ remarks reflect a growing sentiment among fans and pundits calling for smarter recruitment strategies as Pirates look to challenge for honours next season.
