Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite has thrown his full support behind current skipper Yusuf Maart, praising him for stepping up when it mattered most.

Despite facing ongoing criticism about his leadership, Maart’s decisive winning goal against Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup has quieted many doubters.

“That’s football for you — one moment you’re the hero, the next you’re the villain,” Mashamaite told iDiski Times. “But when you put on your boots, you accept that pressure. Scoring the winning goal as captain? That’s real leadership.”

He added, “Wearing the armband means owning the responsibility and proving why the team trusts you. Yusuf showed exactly that.”

Maart made history by becoming the first Kaizer Chiefs captain in ten years to lift a trophy — a feat last achieved by Mashamaite himself, who led Chiefs to a double in the 2014/15 season.

“I’m truly happy for him. With all the criticism and challenges, he’s kept grinding and staying present. This is his moment of redemption and a chance to leave his mark on Chiefs’ legacy,” Mashamaite concluded.
