Kaizer Chiefs have been urged to reconsider their interest in Percy Tau, who is currently a free agent and reportedly willing to join the Soweto giants for a significantly reduced fee.
Former Amakhosi striker Katlego Mphela has raised concerns over the potential move, warning that the club may repeat past mistakes.
“Chiefs haven’t really turned things around over the last few seasons, even though they won a trophy recently,” said Mphela. “They need game-changers who can genuinely improve the team’s performance. Percy Tau is a fantastic player, no doubt—but he may not be the answer.”
Mphela cited a pattern where former Mamelodi Sundowns stars haven’t lived up to expectations after joining Chiefs.
“Look at how things turned out for players like Keagan Dolly, Khama Billiat, and Edward Manqele. The expectations are massive, and that pressure can weigh heavily,” he said. “Percy has quality, yes, but history doesn’t favor Sundowns players making a successful switch to Naturena.”
Chiefs Eye SuperSport Starlet Neo Rapoo
While Tau’s move is being debated, Kaizer Chiefs are also pursuing a much younger option—19-year-old left-back Neo Rapoo, currently at SuperSport United.
Both Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are reportedly battling for his signature ahead of the new season. Rapoo impressed during the recent U20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped guide South Africa to the title.
“Chiefs and Pirates are going head-to-head for Rapoo,” a source close to the player revealed. “He’s already attracted attention from clubs in Scandinavia and the Gulf, but locally, these two are leading the race.”
Pirates’ interest comes after releasing Paseka Mako and the retirement of Innocent Maela, while Chiefs continue to look for solutions in a position that’s been problematic for several seasons.
Rapoo is widely viewed as a future Bafana Bafana regular, making him a long-term investment with high potential.
