Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Junior Khanye has urged Mamelodi Sundowns to bring back Rulani Mokwena following their recent loss in the CAF Champions League final to Pyramids FC.
Under current coach Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns managed to defend their Betway Premiership title but fell short in the Nedbank Cup and the Champions League. Mokwena, who was dismissed in July and later joined Wydad Casablanca, was let go after just 10 months.
Khanye believes Sundowns made a mistake by hiring Cardoso primarily for the Champions League, suggesting they should part ways with him and rehire Mokwena. Speaking on iDiski TV, he said, “If we’re honest, Cardoso was brought in for the Champions League, not because Rulani did anything wrong. They need to get rid of him. I’d bring back Rulani. Maybe he should humble himself, take up the coaching role again since he’s a free agent. He’s talented, a real genius.”
The former Chiefs winger pointed out that Sundowns performed better under Mokwena, which also reflected positively on the national team’s success. “South Africa needs to understand this: it’s not just Sundowns that benefits but the entire nation. We reached AFCON thanks to Sundowns, whether some agree or not. Rulani brought out the best in those players. Credit to Pitso Mosimane for bringing him in and to Rulani for his dedication,” Khanye added.
In Khanye’s view, Mokwena’s return could restore Sundowns’ dominance both domestically and on the continental stage.
