Itumeleng Khune has come to the defense of Orlando Pirates attacker Tashreeq Matthews after the team’s narrow 2-1 loss to Pyramids FC in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final.

Following the defeat, Matthews faced criticism from some fans and pundits, mainly for missing a key scoring opportunity that could have changed the outcome of the match. However, Khune, the experienced Pirates goalkeeper and team captain, urged supporters to show understanding and support for the young forward.

“Tashreeq gave his all on the pitch and worked hard throughout the game,” Khune said in a post-match interview. “Football is a team sport, and it’s not just about one player’s mistakes or chances missed. We win and lose together.”

Khune emphasized that Matthews is still developing as a player and needs encouragement to grow into the impactful attacker the team hopes he will become. “We believe in Tashreeq’s talent and potential. He has shown glimpses of brilliance, and we must back him rather than blame him in tough moments like this.”

Despite the disappointment of falling short in the CAF Champions League final, Khune remains optimistic about the team’s future and the progress young players like Matthews can contribute to that success. “Every defeat is a lesson, and I’m confident that with continued support, we will come back stronger.”

The 2-1 aggregate defeat ended Orlando Pirates’ campaign for continental glory this season, but the message from Khune highlights the importance of unity and belief in the squad as they prepare for the next chapter.
