Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has finally addressed the growing questions and criticism surrounding his decision not to bring on star midfielder Themba Zwane during the crucial CAF Champions League final against Pyramids FC.
The decision to leave Zwane on the bench in the high-stakes second leg, which Sundowns narrowly lost 2-1 on aggregate, has sparked debate among fans, pundits, and former players alike. Many expected the influential playmaker to be a key figure in Sundowns’ attempt to overturn the deficit, but Cardoso opted for a different tactical approach.
Speaking at a post-match press conference, Cardoso explained his reasoning: “Every coach has to make tough decisions based on the flow of the game, fitness levels, and what is best for the team in that moment. Themba is an incredible player, no doubt, but I believed the options on the field were better suited for our strategy that day.”
He continued, “It was a very difficult game with a lot at stake. We tried to manage the match with the players available and the situation on the pitch. Sometimes, those decisions are questioned, but I stand by my choices and the effort of the entire squad.”
Cardoso acknowledged the disappointment felt by supporters but emphasized the collective responsibility of the team. “Football is a team sport, and everyone must share the credit or the blame. Themba has been vital for us throughout the season, and that will never change.”
Despite the loss, Cardoso remains optimistic about the future and committed to learning from the experience. “We will analyze what went wrong and come back stronger. The ambition and hunger in this team are still very much alive.”
The decision not to play Zwane, who has been a consistent match-winner for Sundowns, remains a talking point as the club looks to regroup and plan for the next season after falling just short of continental glory.
