With Innocent Maela departing after eight solid years at Orlando Pirates, the Buccaneers are on the hunt for their next captain ahead of the new season. Several names are in the mix, but who’s most likely to wear the armband?

Captaincy Race Heats Up

Among the top contenders are Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thalente Mbatha, and Thabiso Sesane. Sibisi appears to be the favorite—at 29, he recently led Bafana Bafana in a friendly and commands respect within the squad. However, his place in the starting lineup could be challenged when Sesane returns from injury.

Sesane, sidelined for months due to tendon surgery, was a rock at the heart of Pirates’ defense before his layoff. Known for his calm leadership and solid defending, he’s expected to regain his spot alongside young star Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who has made the left side of the defense his own. Could Sesane also be in the running to become captain?

Don’t count out Thalente Mbatha either — the energetic midfielder’s leadership qualities have caught attention, making him another strong candidate.

Squad Shake-Up Continues

Pirates aren’t just changing captains—they’re revamping the squad too. Insider @UnplayableZA on X hints at up to eight new signings joining soon, including:

  • Sihle Nduli
  • Kabelo Kgositsile
  • Tshepo Mashiloane
  • Yanela Mbuthuma
  • Masindi Nemtajela
  • Nkosikhona Ndaba
  • Sinoxolo Kwayiba
  • Tshepang Moremi

There are also rumors linking Neo Rapoo and Devin Titus with moves to the Buccaneers.

What About the Left-Back Role?

With both Maela and Paseka Mako gone, the left-back spot is wide open. Deon Hotto has been filling in, though it’s not his preferred position. The expected arrival of Tshepo Mashiloane, who can play across both full-back spots, should add much-needed cover and flexibility. Notably, longtime servant Thabiso Monyane has also left the club after 13 years.
