Orlando Pirates fans finally got the answer they’ve been waiting for — Abdeslam Ouaddou is the new man in charge, replacing Jose Riveiro as head coach.

The 46-year-old Moroccan made a name for himself when he helped Marumo Gallants avoid relegation in just 12 games last season. Despite that impressive run, his appointment at Mayfair has sparked mixed reactions — including from a club legend.

VILAKAZI NOT CONVINCED BY THE NEW COACH

Former Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi has shared his honest thoughts, admitting he’s unsure whether Ouaddou is the right fit for a club of Pirates’ stature.

“To be honest, I’m not completely convinced he’s the coach who can take Pirates to the next level,” Vilakazi told the Siya crew.

He did, however, acknowledge Ouaddou’s potential, saying: “I’m not questioning his credentials. He did show promise at Marumo Gallants, but Orlando Pirates is a different beast altogether. The expectations here are enormous. Every decision is under the microscope, and results are demanded week in and week out.”

CALL FOR SUPPORT DESPITE DOUBTS

Even with his reservations, Vilakazi emphasized the importance of unity and support.

“At the end of the day, we have to back him, just like we’ve done with previous coaches. Only time will tell if he’s the right man for the job,” he said.

He added, “Managing a club like Orlando Pirates is no small task — it takes more than tactics. It needs full backing from the board, the players, and especially the fans. I genuinely wish him all the best — he’ll need all the support he can get.”
