Mamelodi Sundowns have decided to stand by head coach Miguel Cardoso following their unexpected CAF Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Pyramids FC. The decision comes despite growing expectations after their domestic dominance.

Last season, Sundowns shocked many by parting ways with Rulani Mokwena, who had led the team to the semi-finals before being eliminated by Cardoso’s former side, Esperance. Now in charge himself, Cardoso couldn’t guide the club beyond the same stage, sparking speculation about his future.

Club Management Backs Cardoso

According to sources close to the club, Sundowns management remains confident in Cardoso’s vision. He is expected to continue as head coach heading into the new season, with a clear mandate to finally deliver the CAF Champions League trophy — something the club hasn’t achieved since 2016.

“There’s definitely pressure for more than just another Premiership title,” a source told Soccer Laduma. “The Champions League is the main objective, and Cardoso will be given the backing to make that happen.”

Transfer Backing and Bigger Influence

Sundowns are reportedly preparing to support Cardoso in the upcoming transfer window. After spending time familiarizing himself with the South African football landscape, the Portuguese coach is set to play a more active role in player recruitment.

With the club eager to add fresh talent to push for continental glory, Cardoso now has the resources and authority to mold the squad into genuine African champions.
