Being a Springbok definitely comes with its perks. After winning back-to-back Rugby World Cups, these stars have become even more in demand, attracting big moves to new clubs both within South Africa and overseas.
Springboks Returning to South Africa
Handre Pollard, Cobus Reinach, and Marvin Orie are all making a return home. These World Cup winners have secured significant deals with local United Rugby Championship teams, including the Bulls and the Stormers.
Pollard has signed a major contract to rejoin the Bulls next season. Reinach, on the other hand, will be joining John Dobson’s Stormers, starting with the 2025/26 campaign in Cape Town. Orie is also expected to link up with the Bulls ahead of the new season.
Meanwhile, Edwill Van Der Merwe has sealed a deal to play for the Sharks from next season.
Springboks Heading Overseas
On the flip side, Manie Libbok, Joseph Dweba, and Herschel Jantjies are set to leave South Africa at the end of this season, all departing from the Stormers.
According to an insider speaking to The Citizen, “Scrumhalves Herschel Jantjies and Paul de Wet will head to Bayonne in France and the Bulls respectively, while hooker Joseph Dweba is moving to Exeter Chiefs in the English Premiership.”
That means three capped Springboks are preparing for new challenges abroad. Libbok is rumored to be taking a sabbatical or possibly going on loan to Japan. Although there’s no official confirmation, the Stormers’ Director of Rugby John Dobson hinted that Libbok’s move might be temporary, with a return expected.
