As Orlando Pirates’ 2024/25 season wraps up, one of their returning loanees, Siphelo Baloni, finds himself facing an uncertain future. The 25-year-old midfielder spent the past season on loan at Chippa United, where he enjoyed a promising spell before injury sidelined him.
Baloni impressed early in the season with the Chilli Boys, notching up goals, assists, and commanding full-match performances across 20 games. But a March injury halted his momentum, leaving questions about what lies ahead as he rejoins Pirates for pre-season training.
“Siphelo didn’t finish the season due to injury, but that’s part of football,” said his agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sports. “Before that, he was contributing consistently, and that attracted interest from other clubs. That’s the growth we want to see in him.”
A Crowded Midfield and a Club in Transition
Baloni’s return comes at a time of transition for Pirates, who are preparing for the 2025/26 season under a new coach following the exit of Jose Riveiro. The midfield, however, is already stacked with talent.
Veteran Makhehleni Makhaula has had his contract extended, while several new faces—including Masindi Nemtajela (Marumo Gallants), Sinoxolo Kwayiba (Chippa United), and Sihle Nduli (Stellenbosch FC)—are expected to arrive at the club during the off-season.
This tight competition means Baloni could once again find himself on the fringes unless he makes a strong case in pre-season.
“When you look at that midfield congestion, you realise game time might be limited. That’s the reality,” said Michaels. “Loans are good for growth. If he doesn’t stay at Pirates, it won’t be due to lack of ability—but because opportunities elsewhere might better suit his development.”
What’s Next for Baloni?
Baloni is still under contract with the Buccaneers, but his career path could depend on what unfolds during pre-season. According to his agent, the loan to Chippa wasn’t something they sought out—it came after a standout friendly performance that caught the eye of then-coach Kwanele Kopo.
“After the friendly, Kopo asked if we could get Siphelo on loan. I went to the chairman with that opportunity and he supported it,” said Michaels.
Whether he remains with Pirates or moves on, Baloni’s next step will be crucial for a player whose talent is clear but who needs regular minutes to reach his full potential.
