South African football has been left in mourning following the sudden and tragic passing of Angelo Tsichlas, a former Mamelodi Sundowns chairperson. He was killed in a car accident on Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Pretoria, according to a family member. Details surrounding the crash are still being investigated.
Angelo, the husband of Natasha Tsichlas — ex-Sundowns managing director and current SAFA vice-president — played a vital role in South African football for decades and helped shape the legacy of one of the country’s most successful clubs.
A Legacy Built with Passion and Purpose
From the late 1980s until 2003, Angelo and Natasha Tsichlas were central figures at Mamelodi Sundowns, co-owning the club with Abe and Solly Krok during a critical growth phase. Their leadership laid the foundation for what would become the powerhouse Sundowns are today.
Even after Patrice Motsepe took over ownership in 2003, Angelo stayed involved behind the scenes, including stepping in as chief technical adviser in 2015.
He is widely recognised for his work in transforming the club’s structure and professionalism, ensuring its long-term success both on and off the pitch.
Tributes Pour In
Current CAF president and Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt tribute:
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Angelo Tsichlas, an exceptional football administrator and a dear friend. Angelo, Natasha, and the entire Tsichlas family have a permanent place in my heart, in the Motsepe family, and in the Sundowns family.”
Motsepe also honoured Tsichlas’ contribution alongside figures like Zola Mahobe and the Krok brothers, crediting them with laying the groundwork for Sundowns’ modern-day success.
“Angelo Tsichlas will remain a lasting figure in the story of this great club,” he added.
Sundowns and the Football World Unite in Grief
Mamelodi Sundowns released an official statement extending condolences to the Tsichlas family, noting that the entire Yellow Nation — from players and staff to supporters — is grieving this deep loss.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr Tsichlas during this difficult time.”
