Just days after officially parting ways with Orlando Pirates, club legend Innocent Maela could be on the verge of an unexpected return — this time in a completely new capacity.
As the Buccaneers prepare to turn the page on a new era following the exit of head coach José Riveiro, talks are intensifying around Maela’s possible reintegration into the club — not on the pitch, but potentially behind the scenes.
After spending eight loyal years at the Soweto giants and rising from the academy ranks to wear the captain’s armband, Maela’s departure raised eyebrows last week. However, sources close to the club suggest his chapter at Mayfair may not be completely closed just yet.
“Right now, no one is revealing much, but the club will make an announcement in due course,” a source told The Citizen. “He’s open to staying on at Pirates in a different role. The club still respects him and stood by him during his injury battles.”
While it’s not clear if his return will involve a coaching role or a place in the club’s backroom operations, it’s evident that Maela still holds a special place at Orlando Pirates.
Stay tuned as more details emerge about this potential homecoming for one of the club’s most respected figures.
