Orlando Pirates have confirmed the signing of Sipho Mbule, the talented but controversial midfielder, ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.
Nicknamed the “Master Chef” for his creativity on the ball, Mbule joins the Buccaneers on a free transfer after being released by Mamelodi Sundowns. The 27-year-old Free State-born star’s stint at Sundowns reportedly ended after he showed up to training under the influence of alcohol, which saw him fall out of favour at Chloorkop.
Missed by Chiefs, Snatched by Pirates
Mbule’s agent, Mike Makaab, had offered his services to Kaizer Chiefs — but with the club taking too long to make a move, Pirates swooped in and announced his signing across social media on Wednesday with a simple statement:
“Orlando Pirates is pleased to welcome Sipho Mbule to the Club.”
While the announcement surprised many, it has sparked conversation across the local football scene.
“He’s Lucky – This Is His Last Chance” – Junior Khanye
Former footballer-turned-analyst Junior Khanye, who once faced similar off-field issues, was candid in his assessment of Mbule’s situation.
“I’m honestly shocked, and he’s extremely lucky,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.
“This is his final chance. We’ve seen players with the same issues being released by Pirates, even when fans loved them. Once you leave under a cloud, it’s over.”
Khanye believes that Mbule has the raw talent to not only shine at Pirates but also earn a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for AFCON 2025 — if he applies himself.
“He needs to thank God, his ancestors, and his youth for this opportunity. If he messes up at Pirates, that’s the end. But if he trains well and plays consistently, he could go to AFCON,” Khanye added.
He also expressed excitement about the prospect of Mbule playing alongside the likes of Patrick Maswanganyi, Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota, and Tshegofatso Mabasa — a midfield combination that could light up the league if things click.
