Orlando Pirates have officially named Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming season, replacing Jose Riveiro, who recently stepped down to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly after three successful years in charge.

The announcement came as a shock to many Pirates supporters, especially after widespread reports last weekend suggested that the club was close to finalizing a deal with former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena.

Instead, the Buccaneers have opted for the experienced Frenchman Ouaddou, who most recently managed Marumo Gallants in the Premiership.

Meet the New Pirates Coach

Born in Alnif, Morocco, 46-year-old Ouaddou boasts a rich football pedigree. As a former Moroccan international, he earned 68 caps for the Atlas Lions and enjoyed a notable playing career across top European leagues.

Known for his tactical knowledge and leadership skills, Ouaddou is seen as the right man to guide Orlando Pirates into a fresh chapter.

He’s expected to arrive in South Africa by the end of the week and will be supported by assistant coaches Mandla Ncikazi, Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich, and Tyron Damons.

Pre-Season Plans and Marbella Tour

Orlando Pirates will officially begin pre-season training on 27 June.

Continuing their recent tradition, the Buccaneers will embark on their third straight international pre-season tour, this time to Marbella, Spain, from 8 July to 20 July.

During the tour, the team will face strong European opponents including Bolton Wanderers (England), Pafos FC (Cyprus), Las Palmas (Spain), and Granada (Spain) in a series of high-profile friendly matches aimed at fine-tuning the squad ahead of the new campaign.
