Orlando Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has weighed in on the leadership situation at the club, suggesting a fresh face who he believes has the right character and presence to take over the captain’s armband from Innocent Maela.
Maela, who has been serving as captain since 2022, missed a significant portion of the 2024/25 season due to injury and inconsistency. This has sparked growing debate among fans and pundits alike about whether the time has come for a change in leadership.
Speaking in a recent interview, Vilakazi—one of the most decorated midfielders in Pirates’ history—did not hesitate to point to Thalente Mbatha as the man best suited to take over the captaincy duties at the Soweto giants.
“Mbatha has shown maturity beyond his years since joining Pirates,” Vilakazi said. “He leads by example on the pitch, has great composure, and you can see his teammates respect him. That’s the kind of presence you want in a captain.”
Mbatha joined Pirates on loan from SuperSport United in early 2024 and made an immediate impact with his calm performances in midfield. His displays were so impressive that the club quickly moved to secure his services on a permanent deal. His consistent form, leadership in tough matches, and ability to rally his teammates have earned him praise from all corners.
While Maela remains a respected figure in the dressing room, his ongoing injury battles have limited his appearances and influence on the field. Vilakazi’s comments will add to the growing sentiment that Pirates need a captain who is not only a leader off the field but also a regular on it.
“To wear the captain’s armband at a club like Pirates, you need more than talent. You need heart, discipline, and the ability to inspire. Mbatha has all that,” Vilakazi added.
With the 2025/26 season approaching, all eyes will be on coach Jose Riveiro and the club’s management as they weigh their options regarding leadership going forward. If Vilakazi’s voice is anything to go by, Mbatha could soon be stepping into one of the most iconic roles in South African football.
