Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau earned praise from fans for his standout performance during Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund at the FIFA Club World Cup in Cincinnati.
After winning their opening match, Masandawana aimed to build momentum against the Bundesliga giants. Sundowns took an early lead through Lucas Ribeiro Costa in the 11th minute, but Dortmund struck back with three goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, and Jobe Bellingham within 29 minutes to take control.
In the second half, Dortmund extended their advantage when Mudau unfortunately scored an own goal. Despite this setback, Sundowns fought hard, with goals from Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba closing the gap. However, the spirited effort wasn’t enough, leaving Sundowns needing a win over Fluminense in their final group game to advance.
Though the own goal was a tough moment, fans were quick to recognize Mudau’s overall solid defensive work throughout the tournament.
One supporter, @Geshlagesh, commented, “I’d love to see Mudau playing overseas — he’s a reliable workhorse and deserves to play for a bigger club.”
Another fan, @cfcidich, added, “Mudau, you’re so under-appreciated. To keep running up and down the pitch like that is amazing. What a player.”
And @Ka_Lindamkhonto noted, “Khuliso Mudau is a funny player — his heroic defending often comes from being out of position, but his speed, athleticism, and clean tackling always bail him out.”
Mudau’s performance showed he remains one of Sundowns’ most dependable players, providing hope for the team’s crucial upcoming clash.
