Oscar Pistorius is gradually stepping back into public life through sport, having recently placed third in his category at the Durban half Ironman triathlon on Sunday. This was his second race since being released on parole earlier this year, and it happened largely under the radar—until spectators began recognizing the former Olympic and Paralympic sprinter mid-race.

Now 37 and living a low-key life in Pretoria, Pistorius participated with official permission under strict parole conditions. His lawyer, Conrad Dormehl, emphasized that sport continues to play a vital role in his rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

“Sport remains a huge part of who Oscar is. It’s helping him reconnect with life beyond prison,” Dormehl said.

A Quiet Comeback

Though not listed publicly as a participant, Pistorius completed the race in under six hours, receiving assistance from lifeguards during the swim portion. His appearance attracted only mild attention, according to those present.

“People started to notice him halfway through, but it didn’t cause a stir,” said photographer Richard Pearce, who was covering the event.

Before this, Pistorius ran the Hoka Half Marathon in Pretoria in May, finishing 98th overall — another low-profile event that reflected his gradual return to fitness and routine.

Life on Parole

Pistorius currently lives with his uncle in the Waterkloof suburb and maintains a quiet existence. Neighbours say he keeps to himself, and many are largely indifferent to his presence.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed his travel to Durban had been formally approved, noting that parole is aimed at rehabilitation, not punishment. Pistorius remains under supervision until December 2029, which includes curfews, travel restrictions, and regular check-ins.

Personal Life and Spiritual Growth

Sources close to Pistorius say he’s making efforts to live “as normal a life as possible,” focusing on physical health and spirituality. He’s reportedly attending church services in Zwavelpoort and has been linked to a new relationship with Rita Greyling, daughter of a well-known farmer.

“He’s growing spiritually,” said a fellow churchgoer. “You can see he’s trying to move forward, step by step.”

From Hero to Tragedy

Once celebrated globally as the “Blade Runner,” Pistorius inspired millions with his Paralympic gold medals and historic participation in the 2012 London Olympics. However, his life took a tragic turn in 2013 when he fatally shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Initially convicted of culpable homicide, his conviction was later upgraded to murder after appeal. He ultimately received a sentence of 13 years and five months.

While Pistorius’ return to sport is unlikely to restore his public image entirely, his quiet efforts at reintegration are drawing mixed reactions. Some view it as a necessary step toward rebuilding his life, while others remain critical given the gravity of his past actions.
