Orlando Pirates are nearing a big reunion with former coach Rulani Mokwena, with talks in the final stages just before the club’s pre-season tour to Spain. After Jose Riveiro’s exit, the Soweto giants acted swiftly to negotiate with Mokwena for the top coaching role.
Technical Team Talks Delay Final Agreement
While both sides are keen to seal the deal, the main hurdle lies in Mokwena’s backroom staff. According to an insider, “Negotiations are advanced, and the 37-year-old is ready to lead, but details about his preferred technical team are still being ironed out.”
Mokwena is known for his methodical style and wants to bring a trusted team, as he did at Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad AC. He has reportedly asked Michael Loftman to join him as assistant coach.
Existing Staff Likely to Stay
Though Loftman is expected to come on board, Mandla Ncikazi looks set to keep his place in the coaching setup. Mokwena’s return would be his second spell at Pirates, having been assistant and caretaker coach between 2017 and 2019 before moving briefly to Chippa United.
Time Running Out Ahead of Pre-season
With players scheduled for medicals next week and the Spain trip set for early July, Pirates are racing against the clock to finalize Mokwena’s appointment. They want their new head coach in place early so he can guide the team’s pre-season preparations from day one.
