Since Pitso Mosimane’s departure from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020, the club has gone through several coaching changes—four to be exact.

After Mosimane left for Al Ahly, Sundowns appointed Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi as joint head coaches. This co-coaching setup lasted until October 2022, when Mokwena was promoted to sole head coach, with Mngqithi stepping down to the assistant role.

Mokwena performed well in charge, but after failing to secure the CAF Champions League title, he was dismissed at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Mngqithi then took over as head coach but was surprisingly replaced in December 2024 by Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso.

Cardoso has now overseen 32 official matches with Sundowns, including leading them to their historic first FIFA Club World Cup win against Ulsan Hyundai amid mixed reactions from fans.

While some supporters still favor Mokwena’s tenure, others back Cardoso and his approach.

Comparing Cardoso and Mokwena After 32 Matches

So far, Cardoso’s record stands at 32 games: 23 wins, 5 draws, and 4 losses.

Mokwena, after the same number of games, had 22 wins, 9 draws, and only 1 loss.

Overall, Mokwena’s tenure at Sundowns included 91 competitive matches, with 60 wins, 22 draws, and 9 losses.
