Orlando Pirates could be set for a major shake-up in their technical team, with reports suggesting that Spanish tactician Pablo Franco Martin is being seriously considered to replace outgoing head coach Jose Riveiro.

Martin, who once served as an opposition analyst at Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti, has a rich coaching background that spans several continents. The 44-year-old has managed clubs in Spain, Tanzania (Simba SC), South Africa (AmaZulu), Kuwait (Qadsia SC), and most recently Saudi Arabia’s Al-Faisaly, from which he recently resigned.

Insiders indicate that the Buccaneers are targeting a coach who can bring a fresh tactical edge as they prepare to mount a serious challenge against Mamelodi Sundowns both in the DStv Premiership and in CAF competitions. Martin’s name has risen to the top of the list, thanks to his proven ability to adapt to different football cultures and his strong analytical approach.

Having already coached in South Africa, Martin is no stranger to local football and could be a familiar yet exciting figure for fans. His time at AmaZulu was marked by structure and strategic play — traits that Pirates are believed to be looking to harness to raise their performance standards.

With the off-season in full swing, fans are eager to see who will take over the reins at Mayfair. Should Martin get the nod, it would be a bold move signalling Pirates’ intent to return to continental dominance.
