A former player of Pitso Mosimane has opened up about his early struggles under the highly respected South African coach, revealing how a tough start later turned into an opportunity to shine.
Speaking in a recent interview, the player – who worked under Mosimane during his time coaching outside South Africa – recalled how the tactician initially left him out of the starting line-up. The reason? Pitso reportedly believed the player didn’t fully fit into his tactical vision at the time.
“At first, I didn’t understand why I wasn’t playing,” the player said. “Coach Pitso had a clear idea of what he wanted in each position. He told me that I needed to improve certain aspects of my game – especially my work off the ball and defensive contribution.”
Although frustrated, the player admits the criticism helped push him to work harder in training and adjust his playing style to meet the coach’s demands.
“I didn’t sulk. I listened, learned, and showed him I could do more than just attack. Slowly, I started getting more minutes. Eventually, I became a regular starter.”
He also praised Mosimane’s honesty and leadership: “He is a perfectionist. He won’t just play you because of your name. You have to earn it. That’s why so many players respect him.”
Pitso Mosimane, who previously led Mamelodi Sundowns to CAF Champions League glory and coached Egyptian giants Al Ahly, is known for his high standards and tactical discipline. Stories like this highlight how he often brings the best out of players through tough love and mentorship.
As the coach continues to build his legacy across Africa and the Middle East, it’s clear that even his critics grow into his biggest supporters – once they understand the method behind the man.
