A former Orlando Pirates goal scorer has commended Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lebogang Mothiba for proving the doubters wrong during the FIFA Club World Cup.
Sundowns experienced a narrow 4-3 loss to German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, with goals coming from Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Iqraam Rayners, and substitute Mothiba — marking his first goal since joining the Yellow and Blue earlier this year.
Mothiba’s arrival at Sundowns has sparked debate among fans, especially due to his extended injury layoff. Since signing in February, he’s made just three appearances, including his debut in the CAF Champions League final second leg against Pyramids FC.
Speaking on SuperSport TV’s Extra Time, former striker Phumudzo Manendze praised Mothiba’s grit and impact off the bench:
“Sundowns started strong but lost momentum after conceding two goals. In the second half, they fought back hard and represented South Africa with pride. The coach’s substitutions, like bringing on Kutlwano Letlhaku who assisted, and Mothiba who scored, lifted the team’s performance.
“There were many questions about Mothiba playing in such a crucial final, but he showed the coach’s faith was well placed by rewarding him with a goal.”
With the tough loss behind them, Sundowns now face a must-win game against Brazil’s Fluminense on Wednesday at 21:00 SA time to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the knockout stage.
