A European publication has reported that French Ligue 1 outfit AS Saint-Etienne are eyeing a move for Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker Lucas Ribeiro Costa. The Brazilian attacker, who has become a central figure in the South African champions’ success, is believed to be on the radar as Saint-Etienne rebuilds for the upcoming season.

According to the report, the French club is weighing up a substantial bid to try and lure Ribeiro to Europe. While no exact figure has been officially confirmed, the publication suggests that the potential offer could turn heads at Chloorkop.

Ribeiro has had a standout campaign for Sundowns, playing a key role in both domestic competitions and the CAF Champions League. His flair, vision, and clinical finishing have made him a fan favourite and a crucial part of Rulani Mokwena’s system. For a player who has consistently delivered on big occasions, any interest from Europe is hardly surprising.

However, the big question being asked in South African football circles is this: is the transfer fee being discussed truly reflective of Ribeiro’s value?

At 25 years old, with a sharp footballing brain and peak years ahead of him, some feel that any move to Europe must command a premium price. In an era where African talent is increasingly being undervalued in the global transfer market, many believe Sundowns must hold firm unless the offer is undeniably significant.

Football analyst and former scout Thabiso Moeketsi shared his thoughts:

“Ribeiro Costa is not just a good player — he’s a system player. He links play, scores goals, and brings European-level quality to the PSL. If Saint-Etienne want him, they should be ready to pay for that pedigree. We’ve seen top talent leave for less than they’re worth before. Sundowns can’t afford to let that happen again.”

While Sundowns have not yet commented on the reported interest, fans are already buzzing with speculation. Losing Ribeiro would undoubtedly be a blow, but with the club’s solid recruitment strategy, they may already be planning ahead — just in case.

Still, for now, all eyes are on whether Saint-Etienne will table a formal offer — and if so, whether it will be enough to tempt the DStv Premiership champions into parting ways with one of their brightest stars.
