Could Ouaddou Be the Key to Saleng’s Comeback – and Mofokeng’s Exit?

The winds of change are blowing at Orlando Pirates following the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new head coach — and it might just spark a major shift in Monnapule Saleng’s future.

Saleng, who hasn’t featured for the Buccaneers since December 7, has been sidelined due to unresolved salary issues with the club. While his exit this offseason has felt all but certain, the arrival of a new coach could open the door for reconciliation.

The 27-year-old winger was spotted back at training near the end of the season, though he never made it into the matchday squad under former coach Jose Riveiro. Still, his presence alone hinted at a willingness to rebuild trust — something Ouaddou may be ready to nurture if he sees Saleng as part of his plans.

With a new philosophy at the helm, it’s possible Saleng’s story at Mayfair isn’t over just yet.

As One Door Opens, Another Might Close

While Saleng’s return hangs in the balance, the spotlight is also firmly on Relebohile Mofokeng — Pirates’ rising star. At just 20 years old, the talented midfielder has attracted serious attention from African giants like Al Ahly and Zamalek, and overseas interest is growing.

His father, Sechaba Mofokeng, recently added fuel to the fire with an emotional plea.

“My biggest wish is to see Rele playing overseas in the 2025/26 season. I pray every day for that. I don’t want him to spend another year in the Betway Premiership,” he said.

“He can succeed in Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — even Barcelona or PSG. I truly believe that. But not Saudi Arabia… not yet. He’s still young. He needs to play in UEFA competitions, to grow. Riches mean nothing if you’re not happy.”

As Ouaddou takes the reins, he may have to plan for a squad without Mofokeng — while possibly welcoming Saleng back into the fold. One player’s exit might make room for another’s return.
