It was widely reported that Kaizer Chiefs had secured the signatures of Orlando Pirates defenders Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane after both rejected contract renewals at Pirates.

Fans were surprised by the prospect of both players switching directly from Pirates to Chiefs at the same time — a move that doesn’t happen often in local football.

Chiefs Now Leaning Towards Just One Signing

However, just as supporters from both sides were warming up to the idea, new information suggests a shift in Chiefs’ plans. According to sources from Soccer-Laduma, Chiefs are now focusing on signing only one of the two — with their preference leaning towards the younger Monyane.

A club insider explained, “The club has been releasing players aged between 31 and 34, so signing 31-year-old Paseka Mako doesn’t make much sense. Thabiso Monyane, at 25, has more years ahead of him. That’s why Chiefs are prioritizing him over Mako.”

Youth Takes Priority at Left-Back

Another source close to Chiefs confirmed the club’s intention to strengthen their left-back spot, but they’re keen on younger options.

“It’s no secret that Chiefs want to improve at left-back, but Paseka Mako is not among the players currently being considered,” the insider said. “While things can always change in football, the focus is on younger talents, including DDC prospects Kabelo Nkgwesa and Nkosana Mbuthu, along with a few others the club has been scouting.”
