Former Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has shared his admiration for Jose Riveiro, the newly appointed head coach of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, but didn’t hold back from issuing a word of caution.

Riveiro, who recently left Orlando Pirates after a successful stint that saw him claim multiple domestic trophies, was unveiled by Al Ahly as their new manager earlier this week. His appointment marks a significant career leap, moving from the South African Premier Soccer League to one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.

Johnson, speaking during a recent media briefing, applauded Riveiro’s tactical prowess and man-management abilities, particularly during his time with the Buccaneers.

“Jose Riveiro has done exceptionally well in South Africa. He brought structure and consistency to Orlando Pirates and showed great ability to adapt to different challenges,” Johnson said.

However, Johnson was quick to point out the pressure cooker Riveiro now finds himself in at Al Ahly, where expectations are sky-high and failure is rarely tolerated.

“Egypt is a different beast. The pressure, the fanbase, the media – everything is amplified. He’ll need to hit the ground running. If he doesn’t start well, he’ll quickly find out how demanding the job really is,” Johnson warned.

With Al Ahly consistently chasing CAF Champions League glory and domestic dominance, Riveiro will have little room for error. But Johnson believes the Spaniard has the tools to thrive — if he can adjust quickly.

“He’s a smart coach, and if he stays grounded and learns the culture fast, he’ll do well. But he must know this isn’t the PSL. It’s a whole different ball game.”

As South African fans watch Riveiro’s journey in North Africa unfold, Johnson’s balanced words of praise and caution offer a fair outlook on what lies ahead for one of Mzansi’s most tactically gifted exports.
