The Barbarians have added two international heavyweights to their lineup for the highly anticipated showdown against the Springboks on 28 June in Cape Town. Irish rugby legend Cian Healy and New Zealand’s Shannon Frizell are the latest stars confirmed for the invitational squad led by coach Robbie Deans.

Healy, 37, brings a wealth of experience to the front row. The Irish powerhouse, who recently retired from international rugby, boasts 137 Test appearances and was part of the British & Irish Lions’ 2013 tour to Australia. Healy holds the record as Ireland’s most capped prop and is also the most capped player in Leinster’s history.

Frizell, 31, is a familiar face to South African fans, having played 33 Tests for the All Blacks, including the 2023 Rugby World Cup final in Paris. He currently plies his trade in Japan with Toshiba Brave Lupus, who recently defended their Japan Rugby League One title.

These additions join the likes of Sam Cane, Peter O’Mahony, and Conor Murray, forming a formidable mix of skill, power, and international pedigree.

Barbarians coach Robbie Deans shared his excitement about the growing squad:

“When building a Barbarians team, we look for versatility, flair, and players who respect the honour of wearing the jersey. Cian brings unmatched experience and can cover both sides of the scrum. Shannon is a powerful and athletic flanker who’s shared the pitch with Sam Cane many times for New Zealand.”

Meanwhile, the Springboks continue with preparations of their own, having wrapped up their second alignment camp. The full national training squad is expected to gather soon once URC playoff fixtures are completed.
