Bafana Bafana legend Teko Modise believes now is the perfect moment for Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng to make the move to Europe.
The 20-year-old has already played nearly 90 games for the Sea Robbers, scoring 18 goals. Since his breakout season, Mofokeng has been recognized as one of the most promising young talents South Africa has produced.
Modise urges Pirates not to hesitate when it comes to selling the young star.
“When it comes to Rele, it’s always hard for Orlando Pirates to let go of top players,” Modise told FARPost. “The last time they had someone this exciting was Thembinkosi Lorch. As South African fans, we want to see our youngsters succeed abroad and reach new heights.”
He added, “I just hope it happens for him sooner rather than later, so he can develop into an even better player. The better Rele becomes, the stronger our national team will be, because he’s destined to become a superstar for Bafana Bafana.”
Mofokeng made his national team debut last year after impressing coach Hugo Broos and has since become a regular in the squad. He is expected to play a key role at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
“I believe Orlando Pirates know just how valuable he is,” Modise said. “I really hope this move overseas happens soon. It would not only benefit Rele but also his family. I want to see him playing in the UEFA Champions League, because if he reaches that level, I’ll be so proud — he would have achieved opportunities I never had.”
Modise concluded, “I’m rooting for him to go abroad. It would be incredible to see this young talent, whom we all watched grow from the DDC to the PSL, take that next big step.”
Last week, Mofokeng earned his sixth cap for Bafana Bafana when he came off the bench against Tanzania.
