Njabulo Blom is back at Major League Soccer outfit St. Louis City SC after completing his loan stint with Kaizer Chiefs — but his long-term future in the U.S. remains uncertain.

Blom, who enjoyed a successful return to Naturena during the 2024/25 campaign, played a key role in helping Chiefs lift the Nedbank Cup. His performances reignited the spark that once made him one of the most talked-about South African exports to the MLS. However, despite his resurgence, his parent club has not yet confirmed whether he will be included in their plans for the upcoming 2025 season.

Blom’s Unclear Role at St. Louis

Sources close to the club have hinted that the technical team hasn’t made a final call on Blom’s status. Although he has returned to the U.S., uncertainty still clouds his future as the club evaluates its squad heading into pre-season.

“There’s still a chance, but it’s a bit murky right now,” a source told Soccer Laduma. “The international slot that opened gives him a glimmer of hope, but there’s no clear indication yet if he’ll be re-registered.”

New Opportunity Arises

One small door that could lead to Blom’s retention is the recent availability of an international player slot in the St. Louis squad. This came after Icelandic striker Nökkvi Thórisson was permanently transferred to Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam, potentially creating room for the South African midfielder.

Still, even with that space available, no firm decisions have been made.

Blom, now 25, originally made his move to the MLS in 2022 but was loaned back to Chiefs last year to get more regular game time. His stint in South Africa reminded many of his potential and maturity, yet it remains to be seen whether that was enough to convince St. Louis City’s decision-makers.
