Orlando Pirates are set to begin their pre-season training this week, giving new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou his first real opportunity to evaluate the squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The Buccaneers had a mixed 2024/25 campaign — finishing second in the league and securing just the MTN8 trophy. Under former coach Jose Riveiro, Pirates earned five trophies in three years, earning the nickname ‘cup kings of South African football.’

With Riveiro’s departure and Ouaddou stepping in, Pirates are hoping for a fresh start and better results next season. Marumo Gallants defender Vusi Sibisi praised Ouaddou’s approach, describing him as a coach who values hard work and meritocracy.

“Coach Abdee is a good coach,” Sibisi told SNL24.
“He demands effort from his players. If you work hard, you’ll get your chance — no favouritism. It doesn’t matter how old you are. If you perform in training, you’ll play.”

Ouaddou has already brought in seven new players to strengthen the squad, including Yanela Mbuthuma, Masindi Nemtajela, Tshepang Moremi, Nkosikhona Ndaba, Tsepo Mashiloane, and Sihle Nduli.

With these new signings, current players like Patrick ‘Tito’ Maswanganyi will have to raise their game. Tito, who impressed in his debut season, has had a quieter 2024/25 and will need to prove he still belongs in the starting lineup.
