Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shared his thoughts following his team’s exit from the FIFA Club World Cup, expressing pride in their performance despite narrowly missing out on a spot in the Last 16.
Sundowns wrapped up their group stage campaign with a goalless draw against Brazilian giants Fluminense at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Wednesday. The result saw the South African champions finish with four points from one win, one loss, and one draw—falling just short of progression.
Speaking after the match, Cardoso commended his team for their commitment and style of play on the global stage.
“We played some of the most beautiful football in this tournament,” the 53-year-old said. “The real story of this game lies in the goal we didn’t score during those first 20 to 25 minutes, where we created so much.”
He continued: “But even after that, we maintained our intensity and quality. I’m incredibly proud of the players and of the club. Everyone watching got to witness an exciting, high-level football match, played in tough conditions.”
Cardoso believes Sundowns have made a strong impression internationally.
“Now, the world knows about Mamelodi Sundowns. People appreciate the kind of football that brings emotion—football that excites, that makes fans sing and jump. That’s what we gave them.”
