Orlando Pirates’ newly appointed head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, will soon get his first real look at his squad during pre-season — and it could be a fresh start for several players.
The Buccaneers are preparing for a trip to Spain next month, where they’ll face top European sides in a series of friendly matches. It’s the perfect opportunity for Ouaddou to evaluate his team and begin shaping his own tactical identity.
Last season, Pirates finished as runners-up in the Betway Premiership for the third year in a row under former coach Jose Riveiro. With Riveiro now out and a new era beginning, players who previously struggled for game time may find themselves with a clean slate.
Here are five players who could thrive under Ouaddou:
1. Karim Kimvuidi
The Congolese forward was largely overlooked last season, making just eight league appearances. But when he did feature, he showed flashes of creativity and attacking flair. With Ouaddou in charge, Kimvuidi now has a real shot at proving his worth.
2. Thabiso Lebitso
Despite being a fan favourite, the right-back only featured twice last season. With Thabiso Monyane departing the club, Lebitso could finally get a chance to compete for a starting spot — likely battling newcomer Deano van Rooyen for the role.
3. Tshegofatso Mabasa
Once a top scorer in the league, Mabasa struggled to win over Riveiro. Now, he could use the fresh start under Ouaddou to reignite his form and reclaim his place as a key goal threat for Pirates.
4. Sipho Mbule
The new signing from Mamelodi Sundowns was reportedly brought in at Ouaddou’s request. That alone suggests he’ll be given a prominent role in the squad — and a chance to make a strong impression early on.
5. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo
The 30-year-old midfielder was almost invisible last season, with just six league appearances. Under a new system and coaching staff, Ndlondlo could finally be given the platform to contribute more consistently.
