Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has voiced his doubts about Orlando Pirates’ new head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The Moroccan tactician was officially named as Jose Riveiro’s successor — a move that caught many off guard, especially with strong rumours linking Rulani Mokwena to the Soweto giants. Khanye believes the Buccaneers have missed a golden opportunity to bring in a more suitable leader.
“I watched him at Marumo Gallants and, yes, he did okay, but a club like Pirates needs someone with a bigger presence,” Khanye told KickOff. “Coaches like Rulani Mokwena or Pitso Mosimane would’ve been better suited to take this team forward.”
Khanye didn’t downplay Ouaddou’s progress with Gallants, noting his success in steering the side away from relegation. But he stressed that coaching Pirates — a club rich in history and trophies — is a different challenge altogether.
“This is a massive brand. You can’t compare it to Gallants. Jose Riveiro left a winning team with trophies and promising young talent. I’m not sure Ouaddou can continue that momentum,” he added.
Khanye: “Pirates Needed Stronger Leadership”
Khanye further speculated that Pirates opted for a coach they could control, implying that the management may want more influence over team decisions.
“Pitso or Rulani would’ve been ideal. They understand the players and the local football culture. Ouaddou should’ve stayed at Gallants, pushed for a cup, and built his CV further before a move like this. Honestly, I’m still confused by the decision.”
As Pirates gear up for their pre-season tour to Spain, questions about the club’s direction and coaching philosophy continue to swirl — and Khanye is clearly not the only one watching closely.
