Kaizer Chiefs could be on the verge of losing their captain, Yusuf Maart, if the club fails to offer him a new deal in time.

According to reports, Chiefs held a two-year extension option on Maart’s current contract, but they let the deadline—the end of May—pass without activating it. This has left the midfielder free to explore other opportunities, though he remains on the club’s books for now.

An experienced agent explained the situation to KickOff:

“If a club doesn’t exercise the option by the end of May, the player becomes free to negotiate elsewhere. But because it’s Chiefs, he might wait and see if they still come to the table.”

The agent also noted that players are often reluctant to leave a club like Chiefs:

“Most players don’t want to leave Chiefs. If Maart still wants to stay, he’ll hold off signing anywhere else until the club makes a final call.”

Maart’s Future Still Open—But Time is Ticking

Maart hasn’t signed with any other team yet, which technically means Chiefs still have a chance to keep him. However, if he accepts another offer and Chiefs only respond after that, they will have missed their opportunity.

From Mixed Reviews to Cup Hero

Maart has had an up-and-down time at Naturena, but he earned the love of many fans after scoring the winning goal in the Nedbank Cup final—securing Chiefs’ first trophy in 10 years with a dramatic victory over Orlando Pirates.

Despite earlier criticism from some supporters, that decisive goal may have shifted public sentiment, making him one of the unexpected heroes of the season.

Now, with his future in limbo, the big question remains: Will Kaizer Chiefs let their captain walk away?
