As the Springboks prepare to kick off their 2025 season with a first-ever home clash against the Barbarians, head coach Rassie Erasmus is pleased with the energy and cohesion in the camp. The team has been boosted by the return of key players from the United Rugby Championship and English Premiership finals, adding firepower and experience to an already determined squad.
Squad Nearly at Full Strength
With just over a week remaining before the Qatar Airways Cup showdown on 28 June in Cape Town, Erasmus says preparations are “well on track.” Players like RG Snyman (Leinster), Handré Pollard (Leicester), and several Bulls stars have linked up with the squad following their club commitments, helping to complete the Bok puzzle.
“The early alignment camps really helped us,” said Erasmus. “Everyone’s on the same page, and that allows us to move quicker into match readiness.”
He also highlighted the call-up of prop Boan Venter, brought in to bolster the front row after an impressive season with Edinburgh. “Boan’s journey from the Cheetahs and junior levels speaks to his consistency. We trust his ability, especially in the scrums,” Erasmus added.
Barbarians Test a Vital Launchpad
Though the Barbarians are known for their unpredictable and entertaining style of play, Erasmus is treating the match as more than just a spectacle—it’s a crucial opportunity to build rhythm before the official Tests against Italy and Georgia in July.
“The Barbarians will come to express themselves, no doubt,” he said. “But for us, the goal is clear—get our systems working, build our combinations, and start the campaign strong.”
This landmark fixture marks the first time the Boks will face the Barbarians on home soil. It also sets the tone for a demanding Incoming Series:
- 5 July: Springboks vs Italy at Loftus, Pretoria
- 12 July: Springboks vs Italy at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Gqeberha
- 19 July: Springboks vs Georgia in Nelspruit
With the full schedule looming, Erasmus and his squad are focused on sharpening their tactics, regaining synergy, and laying the foundation for another successful year of South African rugby.
