As Kaizer Chiefs prepare for the upcoming Betway Premiership and CAF Confederation Cup campaigns, several new faces are expected to join the squad. Among the confirmed additions are former Orlando Pirates defenders Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane.
However, not everyone is convinced these signings are the right moves for Amakhosi. Junior Khanye, ex-Kaizer Chiefs winger turned pundit and YouTuber, expressed surprise and concern over Chiefs’ decision to bring in Mako and Monyane.
Khanye told Soccer Laduma he found it puzzling that Pirates released Monyane after investing heavily in his development. He pointed out the inconsistency in releasing Monyane while keeping players like Thabiso Lebitso, who had limited game time due to injury.
“It’s like sending your child to school, paying the fees, and when they don’t perform, just abandoning them,” Khanye said, questioning the logic behind Pirates’ and Chiefs’ handling of these players.
Is Percy Tau the Answer for Chiefs?
Meanwhile, Chiefs are also eyeing experienced attackers, with former Sundowns star Percy Tau reportedly on their radar after leaving Qatar SC. Tau, who has a rich trophy cabinet including CAF Champions League titles and an AFCON bronze medal, made just 10 appearances in Qatar last season but still attracted interest.
Despite this, former Chiefs striker Siphiwe Tshabalala warned that signing Tau might not solve the club’s woes. Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Tshabalala highlighted a pattern where ex-Sundowns players struggle to meet the high expectations at Chiefs, including himself.
He said, “Chiefs need players to turn things around after a poor few seasons, but I’m not convinced Tau will be that player. The pressure and expectations at Chiefs can weigh heavily on players, leading to disappointment.”
As Amakhosi continue their transfer business, fans are left wondering if these moves will finally spark a revival or if more strategic signings are needed to challenge for silverware again.
