The Proteas began the World Test Championship final against Australia with intensity and early breakthroughs, leaving the Aussies reeling at 57-4 on Day 1. However, the momentum quickly shifted as Australia countered strongly, particularly going after fast bowler Lungi Ngidi.

Ngidi, making a return to Test cricket after a long absence, had a tough outing. In his opening spell, he bowled eight overs for 45 runs without a wicket, lacking both control and the sharp edge that once defined his early international appearances.

His performance came under scrutiny, with former Proteas great Dale Steyn offering a blunt but insightful critique on social media. Responding to a fan who pointed out how Ngidi let pressure slip after lunch, Steyn dissected the bowler’s rhythm and approach.

“His run-up needs serious work,” Steyn wrote. “He starts well, but by the time he hits the second half, he slows down. It looks almost pedestrian, and he ends up forcing pace through his action, which makes it hard to be consistent.”

Steyn, now a respected coach around the world, was once known for his explosive pace and relentless energy — attributes that Ngidi seemed to lack on this occasion.

The 2025 WTC final saw Ngidi included in a Proteas XI that combined experience and fresh talent, with the likes of Temba Bavuma (captain), Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, and Marco Jansen all part of the setup.

Ngidi’s inclusion was seen as a gamble — one that, so far, hasn’t paid off. While South Africa made a spirited start with the ball, the loss of momentum and Australia’s attacking response now leave the Proteas with work to do heading into the rest of the match.

As the final progresses, all eyes will be on whether the Proteas can bounce back — and if Ngidi can find the spark that once made him one of South Africa’s most promising quicks.
