Orlando Pirates will have a new captain leading the team next season after Innocent Maela parted ways with the club, having worn the captain’s armband for three years.

The club’s longest-serving former captain, Lucky Lekgwathi, has suggested three strong contenders to take over the leadership role ahead of the new campaign.

The candidates include the central defensive duo — Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi — along with central midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula.

A special mention was also given to the exciting young talent, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who has caught the eye with his performances.

Lucky Lekgwathi Shares His Thoughts on the Next Captain

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Lekgwathi said:

“Tapelo has consistently performed well and showed great leadership whenever he wore the captain’s armband. I believe he’s ready to take on the role fully.”

He continued:

“Sibisi has also done a commendable job as captain when called upon. Both he and Xoki still have room to grow as leaders.”

Regarding Makhaula, Lekgwathi added:

“Makhaula brings valuable experience, having captained AmaZulu before. I’m confident he can guide the team effectively.”

Looking ahead, Lekgwathi highlighted the future potential of Mbokazi, saying:

“Keep an eye on Mbokazi — he’s the future of Pirates leadership. One day, he’ll be wearing that armband.”
