Orlando Pirates are set to enter the transfer market for defensive reinforcements following the confirmed exits of two long-serving left-backs, Innocent Maela and Paseka Mako.
End of an Era at Left-Back
The Soweto giants will bid farewell to captain Innocent Maela and veteran Paseka Mako at the end of June, leaving a significant void on the left side of their defence. Maela, who has seen limited game time over the past two seasons, has reportedly been offered a non-playing role at the club. The 33-year-old is now weighing up whether to retire or continue playing elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Mako departs as a free agent and is strongly tipped to join rivals Kaizer Chiefs. Having joined Pirates in 2018, the 30-year-old featured in 173 games, largely operating from left-back. In recent seasons, he alternated with Deon Hotto before reclaiming the position when the Namibian moved further forward.
Ndaba Already Lined Up as Successor
While rumours continue to swirl about potential targets like Fawaaz Basadien and Vuyo Letlapa, Pirates have already secured a fresh face to address the gap. Richards Bay’s 22-year-old full-back Nkosikhona Ndaba has reportedly joined the Buccaneers ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Ndaba made 40 appearances for Richards Bay and contributed two assists, showcasing defensive consistency and attacking potential. According to journalist Austin Ditlhobolo, Ndaba is seen as a direct replacement for the departing duo, bringing youth and energy to the position.
With changes underway, Pirates are clearly focused on refreshing their backline as they prepare for a new era post-Jose Riveiro, aiming to remain competitive both domestically and in continental competitions.
