Orlando Pirates Clear Out Veterans – Is This the Rise of a New Buccaneers Generation?

Orlando Pirates are laying the groundwork for a new era by bringing in youthful talent to strengthen their defensive and midfield ranks.

The Soweto giants have made bold decisions ahead of the new season, releasing full-backs Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako. These exits clear the way for fresh blood, with the versatile Tshepo Mashiloane—signed from Baroka—expected to push both Deano van Rooyen and Deon Hotto for starting berths on either flank.

Meanwhile, in midfield, Pirates have an eye on the future. With veteran Makhehlene Makhaula nearing the twilight of his career, 24-year-old Masindi Nemtajela of Marumo Gallants is being lined up as a long-term replacement. Nemtajela is a tough-tackling, box-to-box midfielder who posted a solid return of one goal, two assists, and four bookings in 17 DStv Premiership appearances last season.

While the Buccaneers already boast quality in central defence and attack, their depth in wide defensive positions has been a concern. The introduction of younger options signals a tactical shift—one designed to blend current strength with future potential.

If things continue in this direction, next season’s best possible Pirates XI could look like this:

Chaine; Van Rooyen, Sesane, Mbokazi, Hotto; Mbatha, Nemtajela; Nkota, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng; Mabasa.

With a refreshed roster and rising stars knocking on the door, the Sea Robbers might just be building a squad capable of dominating South African football for seasons to come.
