Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has finally opened up about the shock exclusion of Themba Zwane from the CAF Champions League final — and while he chose his words wisely, the respect he holds for “Mshishi” was loud and clear.

Zwane, a key figure in Sundowns’ record-setting eighth Betway Premiership title, was a notable absentee during the CAF final, leaving fans puzzled and disappointed. Now, Mokwena has shed some light on his feelings without directly criticising the decision.

“It’s always been that way,” Mokwena said on Soccer Africa.
“I’d rather not get into it because I’ve always made it clear how I feel about Mshishi — and people know.”

“Mshishi is Special” — More Than Just a Player

Mokwena didn’t just speak about Zwane the footballer; he spoke about Zwane the symbol — a product of township football, born on the gritty streets of Tembisa, who rose through adversity to shine on the continental stage.

“He’s special. He represents so much more than just football. From Vardos to now, he’s been at the top for so many seasons,” Mokwena said, highlighting Zwane’s inspirational journey.

For Mokwena, Zwane embodies the soul of South African football: raw talent honed in the dust, flair developed barefoot on the streets — a reminder of where many local greats come from.

“Players like Mshishi must succeed, because that’s how we revive our football culture. We need to protect and elevate our street football identity.”

More Than Just a Tactical Call

Although Mokwena stopped short of openly criticising Zwane’s omission, he hinted that, in his hands, things might’ve been different.

“It’s not for me to say — there are always match-day dynamics. But as Sundowns coach, I played Mshishi nine times out of ten.”

That subtle comment speaks volumes. Mokwena clearly believes that Zwane — who remains an icon in the township communities — should have featured on the biggest stage of all.

An Inspiration to the Next Generation

Mokwena’s admiration went beyond tactics. He spoke of Zwane as a role model, someone who inspires youth from disadvantaged areas to dream bigger.

“To the kid in Tembisa — who sees all the negative paths they could take — Mshishi shows there’s another way. He played barefoot on the streets, and now he’s played in the Champions League and is heading to the Club World Cup.”

Final Thoughts

Mokwena may no longer be at Sundowns, but his deep respect for Themba Zwane remains firm. For him, Zwane’s value isn’t just measured in goals or assists — it’s in the hope he gives to a generation.
