Kaizer Chiefs could be missing out on a rising defensive star. Talented right-back Mhleli Mabuza recently spent a week on trial at Naturena but walked away without a contract, sparking confusion among fans and questions about the club’s scouting decisions.
The 24-year-old, known for his offensive contributions from the back and experience in Europe, now appears to be exploring other avenues as Chiefs remain silent.
No Follow-Up After Naturena Trial
Mabuza’s trial came at a tough time — during the closing weeks of the Betway Premiership season — a period typically focused on wrapping up fixtures, not assessing new talent. Despite this, there was hope that the Chiefs technical team would take a closer look. That hope has now faded.
“He’s got a concrete offer from Portugal, and there’s a deadline at the end of June,” a source told FARPost. “Locally, there’s also interest from a few PSL clubs.”
European Success Ignored?
Before his Chiefs trial, Mabuza was making waves in Portugal, playing for Louletano DC. There, he not only solidified the defence but also grabbed nine assists — a rare feat for a defender. His performances earned him the Best Right-Back award in the Campeonato de Portugal.
A newly promoted Portuguese club has already offered him a deal, but the offer is time-sensitive, with a deadline of 30 June.
A Journey of Grit and Growth
Having moved to Portugal in 2018, Mabuza has overcome language barriers, culture shocks, and a different style of play to shape his career in Europe.
“It wasn’t easy. Everything was new — the language, the lifestyle, even the football philosophy,” Mabuza previously shared.
PSL Clubs Now on Alert
While Chiefs have yet to take action, other South African clubs aren’t standing still. AmaZulu, TS Galaxy, and Sekhukhune United are all monitoring his situation closely.
With his contract in Portugal expired, Mabuza is currently a free agent — making him an ideal low-cost addition for clubs looking to reinforce their backline.
