As Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates gear up for the new season, an unexpected transfer twist has emerged involving long-serving Buccaneers defender Thabiso Monyane.

According to SABC Sport, Monyane’s contract with Pirates is set to expire at the end of June, and so far, there’s been no sign of a renewal from the club. With his game-time shrinking and injury struggles affecting his form, the 24-year-old is reportedly being “offered” to Kaizer Chiefs as a free agent.

Should Amakhosi make a move?

Kaizer Chiefs, who are known to be on the lookout for depth and experience in key positions, might see Monyane as a low-risk, high-value option. On the other hand, it’s unclear if Pirates might have a last-minute change of heart and extend his stay, despite already having solid right-back options in the squad.

Monyane’s journey at Orlando Pirates started back in 2012 when he attended open trials. After working his way through the ranks, he made his professional debut in the 2019/20 season opener and has since featured in nearly 100 matches across all competitions.

With time ticking and no clarity on his future at Mayfair, the ball may soon be in Kaizer Chiefs’ court. Will they make a bold move for a seasoned rival, or will Pirates act to retain one of their own?
