Orlando Pirates are preparing to usher in a new chapter as they search for a head coach to lead them into the 2025/26 season. This follows the departure of Jose Riveiro, who leaves behind a legacy of silverware and strong performances both locally and continentally.
Riveiro’s Winning Spell Comes to an End
Riveiro spent three impactful years at the helm of the Buccaneers, guiding the club to five major trophies. These include a remarkable treble of MTN8 titles and back-to-back Nedbank Cup triumphs. Under his leadership, Pirates also finished second in the Betway Premiership and made a triumphant return to the CAF Champions League group stages — topping their group without a single defeat.
His tenure saw Pirates reach the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League and the final of the Nedbank Cup once again, cementing his place as one of the most successful coaches in recent club history.
Rulani Mokwena Linked with Surprise Return
With the coaching role now vacant, a familiar face is being linked to the hot seat — Rulani Mokwena. The former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, who previously had a stint with Pirates, has sparked speculation after expressing his affection for the club and its leadership.
Speaking on Soccer Africa, Mokwena said:
“I don’t know… I’ve just returned to the country. But of course I’d consider it. Pirates is a big club and still home to people I deeply care about. I have immense respect for Dr. Khoza — he’s had a massive influence on my career and life overall.”
With fans buzzing and the Sea Robbers poised to make their next big move, all eyes are on who will take the reins and lead Pirates into a new era.
