Kaizer Chiefs appear to be circling back to a familiar name, reigniting their pursuit of Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana. The talented wide man, who previously turned down Amakhosi to join Tunisian giants Esperance, is once again being linked with a move to Naturena.
Mokwana Back on Chiefs’ Radar
Though Mokwana hasn’t nailed down a regular starting spot at Esperance, he’s proven to be a valuable impact player off the bench. Despite limited starts, he’s racked up 25 league appearances this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists. In continental competition, Mokwana shone brighter — registering five goal contributions in eight CAF Champions League matches, showing his big-game quality.
Fiston Mayele No Longer an Option?
Meanwhile, one of Chiefs’ long-term striker targets, Fiston Mayele, might now be out of reach. Reports from Egypt suggest the prolific forward, currently with Pyramids FC, will leave at the end of the season — but not without commanding a hefty fee. Offers for Mayele are reportedly as high as R74 million, a figure far beyond what Chiefs are likely willing to spend.
According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Mayele’s contributions — including being the top scorer in the CAF Champions League — have attracted significant attention and offers far beyond his current $1 million-per-season deal at Pyramids. Chiefs, it seems, may have to move on.
Ighodaro Still on the Watchlist
With Mayele looking out of reach, attention may shift back to Etiosa Ighodaro. Chiefs have reportedly enquired once again about the Mamelodi Sundowns striker. A familiar name in local football circles, Ighodaro has already impressed during loan spells at Chippa United and AmaZulu.
Interestingly, the same scouts who discovered him for Sundowns are believed to be behind the renewed interest from Chiefs. Sources suggest this isn’t the first time the club has asked about him — they previously showed interest when he was on loan, but Sundowns instead sent him to SuperSport United. Now, with a possible opening, Amakhosi could make a fresh approach.
