After yet another disappointing CAF Champions League final, this time falling to Pyramids FC, cracks may be starting to show at Mamelodi Sundowns. Despite the club’s heavy financial investment and ambition to add a second star to their badge, the Brazilians once again fell short on the continent’s biggest stage.
Big Spending, But Still No Star
Sundowns have spared no expense in assembling a star-studded squad over the years, aiming to dominate both domestically and in Africa. Yet the elusive second CAF Champions League title remains out of reach. With the disappointment still fresh, change seems inevitable.
Quick Turnaround Before Club World Cup
There’s little time for Sundowns to dwell on the final defeat. The FIFA Club World Cup kicks off this month in the United States, and the team must regroup quickly. While club chairman Thlopie Motsepe previously announced there would be no new signings before the tournament, player departures are already in motion.
Sipho Mbule and Rivaldo Coetzee Exit the Scene
According to their agent, Mike Makaab, both Sipho Mbule and Rivaldo Coetzee are now free agents after the club opted not to activate extensions on their contracts.
“Of the players we represent, most had their options exercised by Sundowns, but two stood out—Rivaldo Coetzee and Sipho Mbule. From June 1st, both are free to sign with any club,” Makaab confirmed to Gagasi FM, as quoted by iDiski Times.
Cutting Ties With High-Risk Players?
Mbule, who spent time on loan at Sekhukhune United, had a rocky stint marked by off-field issues and an early release. Coetzee, meanwhile, has battled injuries year after year, making his exit less surprising. It appears Sundowns are finally drawing the line and choosing to move forward without them.
With the Club World Cup looming and pressure mounting for continental glory, this summer could mark the beginning of a significant rebuild at Chloorkop.
