Orlando Pirates are setting their sights on a bold managerial move, with Spanish tactician Pablo Franco Martin emerging as a top contender to replace current head coach Jose Riveiro.

Martin, who once served as an Opposition Analyst under Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, brings a wealth of global experience to the table. The 44-year-old has coached across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East — including stints in Spain, South Africa (AmaZulu FC), Tanzania (Simba SC), Kuwait (Qadsia SC), and most recently, Saudi Arabia, where he led Al-Faisaly before stepping down.

Pirates’ interest in Martin signals the club’s intent to elevate their tactical setup and mount a stronger challenge against domestic powerhouses like Mamelodi Sundowns. With CAF competitions also on the horizon, the Buccaneers appear to be targeting a more progressive, international approach.

Martin’s familiarity with African football — thanks to his time at Simba and AmaZulu — could work in his favour as Pirates weigh their options ahead of the new season. His coaching résumé suggests a forward-thinking strategist who blends tactical structure with the ability to adapt across different football cultures.

While no official confirmation has been made, Pirates fans are watching developments closely as the club looks to refresh its technical bench and raise its ambitions.
