The transfer rumour mill is buzzing with reports that Monnapule Saleng has signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs, as per Soccer Laduma. While nothing has been officially confirmed, the speculation is already stirring up strong opinions in the local football scene.
One of the loudest voices is that of Orlando Pirates legend and all-time top scorer Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi. He isn’t convinced that Saleng is the right fit for Amakhosi.
“Can Saleng really adapt to the way Chiefs play?” Vilakazi asked skeptically. “I don’t think so.”
He went on to draw comparisons to players like Gastón Sirino, who has struggled to replicate his Mamelodi Sundowns form at Chiefs. “Just look at Sirino now — he’s not the same player. It’s the same thing we saw with Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly. The issue is not always the player — it’s the lack of a solid supporting cast.”
Vilakazi warned that Saleng could suffer the same fate if Chiefs don’t build a stronger core around him. “You can’t expect one player to carry the team. Without the right system and teammates who complement his style, he’ll be under pressure.”
Salum to Soweto next?
In related news, Kaizer Chiefs appear to be making another move. Midfielder Feisal Salum, who has long been on their radar, is reportedly close to finalizing a switch to Naturena. Head coach Nasreddine Nabi is believed to have personally traveled to Tanzania to engage with the player — a clear sign of intent.
The 27-year-old is expected to land in South Africa in the coming days to iron out final details, which could make him Chiefs’ first official signing of the off-season.
As Chiefs prepare for a major squad overhaul, fans will be hoping that new arrivals — including Saleng if confirmed — will be the key to restoring the club’s former glory.
